IndyCar’s Kyffin Simpson survives a terrifying airborne crash during Indy 500 practice, raising concerns ahead of the May 25 race.
IndyCar driver Kyffin Simpson experienced a heart-stopping moment during Indianapolis 500 practice on Friday when his car went airborne after a violent crash. The incident occurred as Simpson navigated the final turn, his vehicle’s rear end losing grip, sending him careening into the wall. The impact lifted his car briefly off the track before it slammed back down, scattering debris across the asphalt.
Practice was halted temporarily as emergency crews rushed to the scene. Remarkably, Simpson emerged unscathed, telling reporters, "I’m all good, praise the Lord." He described the crash as "weird," noting that his car felt off from the start. "Something didn’t feel right," he said, adding that his team would analyze data to prevent a repeat.
The young Caymanian, racing for Chip Ganassi Racing since 2023, is still chasing his first IndyCar victory. His career-best finish came earlier this year with a 10th-place result at the Grand Prix of Long Beach. As the Indy 500 looms, Simpson’s team faces the challenge of rebuilding confidence and machine ahead of the May 25 race, set to air live on FOX at 10 a.m. ET.

Kyffin Simpson’s car took flight like it was auditioning for a Hollywood blockbuster, but the Indy 500 isn’t a stunt show! Jokes aside, this ‘weird’ crash hints at deeper setup issues for Chip Ganassi Racing. If their data dive doesn’t yield answers, they might be praying for more than just speed on race day.
