Discover America's laundromat bars, blending laundry with beer, food, and fun. From Reno to Portland, see how chores become social events.

Picture this: the hum of washing machines, the clink of beer glasses, and the nostalgic buzz of arcade games. Across America, laundromats are getting a vibrant makeover, transforming the mundane chore of laundry into a social event. From Brooklyn's trendy 'laundrobars' to long-standing spots in Reno and Portland, these hybrid hangouts are proving that clean clothes and good times can indeed mix.

In Reno, Nevada, Duds n' Suds has been a pioneer since the 1980s, offering beer, snacks, and even slot machines alongside its washers and dryers. Jimmie May, who took over the spot in 2019 with his wife Brandy Johnson, chuckles at the surprise on customers’ faces when they spot the bar. 'They come in expecting drudgery, then they see the beer and suddenly volunteer for laundry duty every week,' May shared with a grin. But it’s not all suds and fun—keeping the business spinning comes with a hefty $9,000 monthly lease, a reminder of the hard work behind the quirky concept.

Meanwhile, in Portland, Oregon, Spin Laundry Lounge reimagines the laundromat as a cozy café, complete with pinball machines and a mezzanine overlooking the washers. Founder Morgan Gary, who opened Spin in 2014, aimed to ditch the dreary vibe of traditional laundromats. 'We wanted a space that feels like home,' she said. Food and drink have been key to Spin’s success, drawing in locals and travelers alike. Despite a pause during the pandemic, a recent partnership with Brave Neighbor Coffeehouse has brought the café buzz back, allowing Spin to focus on community initiatives like free laundry vouchers and 'wash parties' to educate folks on garment care.

Spin’s heartwarming touch? Collecting orphaned socks left behind and donating them to shelters. It’s a small but meaningful gesture in a city known for its rainy days and big heart. Looking ahead, Gary hopes to host more events and expand delivery services, inspired by seeing similar businesses pop up nationwide.

From coast to coast, these laundromat bars are washing away the boredom of chores, proving that a little creativity—and a cold beer—can turn even the most tedious tasks into a reason to gather. As this trend grows, it’s clear: laundry day might just become the highlight of the week.

Well, folks, if laundry day now comes with a side of beer and pinball, I’m starting to think I’ve been folding my priorities wrong all these years! But seriously, between Reno’s slot-machine suds and Portland’s sock-saving heroes, these spots are spinning more than just clothes—they’re weaving community in the most unexpected places. Here’s a joke to wash down the news: Why don’t laundromats ever get lonely? Because they’ve always got a load of friends!
