Brief

Lawrence Taylor's legendary New York Giants draft night, wild celebration, and Hall of Fame NFL impact resurface as the team eyes future defensive stars in the 2025 draft.

Lawrence Taylor’s name is practically carved into New York Giants history, but his NFL Draft story remains just as unforgettable as his on-field highlights.

Back in 1981, the Giants held the No. 2 pick—a spot that can make or break a franchise. Their choice? Linebacker Lawrence Taylor from North Carolina, a decision that would turn out to be pure gold. Taylor was picked right after Saints running back George Rogers and ahead of notables like Freeman McNeil and Kenny Easley. Not a bad crowd to stand out from.

But it’s not just Taylor’s football prowess that gets people talking. Over a decade ago, the Hall of Famer revealed his draft night escapades, and, honestly, it’s the stuff of legend. Asked about that night, Taylor admitted, “I don’t remember too much. I had 41 Coors Lights so I couldn’t tell you… I just know it was an exciting time but it wasn’t like this. It was old school. It wasn’t in New York or anything.” He wasn’t alone either—his “drinking buddies” were right by his side. If there was ever a way to celebrate getting drafted, Taylor certainly found it.

That wild draft night recollection resurfaced this week and immediately caught fire again online. Fans can’t seem to get enough of Taylor’s unfiltered honesty—maybe because it feels like a time when pro football still had a little wild west in it.

Of course, Taylor’s real impact came on the field. His rookie season? He snagged both Defensive Rookie of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year honors right out of the gate. He then earned First-Team All-Pro six times in his first six seasons and helped the Giants win two Super Bowls. Not bad for a guy whose first night as a Giant is a little hazy.

Fast forward to today, and the Giants are again eyeing a defensive powerhouse with the No. 3 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. There’s talk of Abdul Carter being the next big thing. No word yet on how many beers he’ll have if he gets picked—though he’ll have to go big to top LT’s record.

Editor's Comments

Lawrence Taylor remembering his draft night through a haze of 41 Coors Lights is peak NFL energy. The Giants were looking for someone to shake up their defense, but I doubt they realized Taylor would also shake up the notion of moderation. If the rookie the Giants pick this year tries to top LT’s draft night, I hope the team at least equips him with a hydration coach.
