Legacy media revisits Democratic scandals, including Hunter Biden's dealings, COVID-19 lab-leak theory, and Joe Biden's mental health, sparking renewed political controversy ahead of the 2024 election.

Legacy media outlets and seasoned political journalists are finally revisiting scandals involving the Democratic Party—years after conservative voices first flagged them. With the November elections looming, it seems the investigative spotlight has shifted back to unresolved controversies that Republicans have shouted about for ages.

Take Hunter Biden, for example. The New York Times has now decided—a casual 4.5 years later—to dive into allegations surrounding the former First Son's suspected influence-peddling. The New York Post editorial board didn’t hold back, calling out the Times for reporting on Biden’s alleged corruption long after the story had lost its political heat.

Hunter Biden, while serving on the board of Ukrainian energy company Burisma, allegedly leveraged his father’s position as vice president to seek support from the State Department. Republicans have long argued that the Bidens engaged in influence-peddling, with accusations of coercing Burisma’s CEO into paying millions in exchange for assistance in firing a Ukrainian prosecutor investigating the company. Joe Biden has consistently denied these claims.

Adding another layer to this saga, Biden issued his son a sweeping 10-year pardon before leaving office, covering Hunter for any offenses committed between 2014 and 2024. This move, unsurprisingly, reignited Republican criticism about alleged shady dealings within the Biden family.

But Hunter Biden’s case isn’t the only issue legacy media appears to have rediscovered. The New York Times has also taken a fresh look at the origins of COVID-19, publishing a column last month claiming the scientific community misled the public by suppressing the lab-leak theory—a theory once dismissed as conspiracy. The Trump administration’s CIA recently supported the lab-leak theory as the likely origin of the virus, further undermining earlier dismissals by media and scientists.

Meanwhile, President Biden’s mental acuity continues to be a hot-button topic. Longtime D.C. reporters Jonathan Allen and Amie Parnes have released a book detailing Biden’s mental decline leading up to the election, calling him a "shell of himself." Concerns over Biden’s mental fitness were amplified during his debate with Trump in June 2024, which many regarded as a disaster. Shortly after, Biden dropped out of the race and endorsed Kamala Harris, who ultimately failed to rally enough support to defeat Trump in November.

Jake Tapper, a CNN anchor, is also set to release a book addressing Biden’s decline and the alleged Democratic cover-up, adding more fuel to the fire. While Biden’s post-presidential office has yet to respond to these fresh waves of scrutiny, one thing is clear: legacy media’s newfound interest in these stories comes at a curious time when political stakes are high, but the outcomes feel largely inevitable.

It's almost comical how legacy media seems to wake up to these scandals only after the political theater is over. The timing makes it feel less like journalism and more like a belated attempt to save face—years after the curtain already fell. Also, Hunter Biden’s pardon? That’s one heck of a get-out-of-jail-free card!
