Lisa Rinna candidly discusses her struggle with postpartum depression, including hallucinations and marital challenges, and how antidepressants helped her recovery, on her podcast with Harry Hamlin.
Lisa Rinna is known for her quick wit and reality TV drama, but she recently revealed a side of herself that’s far more raw and real. In a candid episode of her podcast with husband Harry Hamlin, Rinna opened up about her battle with postpartum depression, which reached a point where she threatened Hamlin's life.
Rinna, now 61, said she had no idea what she was experiencing after giving birth to her first child. "When you have your first baby, you don’t know. You just don’t know," she admitted, recalling the confusion and darkness she felt. The storm returned after her second daughter, Amelia, was born in 2001. That’s when things got truly alarming.
Hamlin recounted, "You said, ‘I’m going to kill you.' I said, ‘You better call your OB-GYN right now.' You said, ‘You better watch out. I feel like killing you.’ You said, ‘Keep the knives in the drawer.'" Now that's not your average marital spat, but a terrifying glimpse into how serious postpartum depression can get.
Rinna said she doesn’t specifically remember threatening Hamlin, but she does remember the vivid hallucinations: "I was having these horrible hallucinations of killing people, and I needed to take the knives out of the house. And I also had horrible visions of driving a car into a brick wall."
According to medical experts, postpartum depression can lead to thoughts of self-harm or harming others. Rinna clarified that her dark visions never involved her children. "It wasn’t about that. It was about hopelessness, darkest depression and these horrible visions, hallucinations." She described feeling absolutely hopeless, like a "huge dark cloud" had settled over her. "Looking back, I was completely psychotic," she said.
Thankfully, with the help of antidepressants, Rinna said things improved quickly, describing the medication as a game changer. She first experienced these symptoms after the birth of her oldest daughter, Delilah, in 1998.
Despite the rollercoaster, Rinna and Hamlin’s marriage has endured since 1997. The two are famously different in almost every way—Hamlin cooks, Rinna doesn’t; he avoids pop culture, she basically lives in it. Somehow, their opposites-attract dynamic keeps the family fed and the pop culture references flowing.

If Lisa Rinna and Harry Hamlin can survive postpartum-induced threats and still joke about who cooks dinner, maybe there’s hope for the rest of us. But seriously, this is a stark reminder that mental health can hit hard, even in Hollywood. Also, keeping knives in the drawer is probably good advice for any couple during sleepless baby years!
