Kelly Stafford shares her emotional journey during Matthew Stafford’s contract negotiations with the Rams, revealing relief and gratitude as his restructured deal secures their future in Los Angeles.

Kelly Stafford, wife of Super Bowl-winning quarterback Matthew Stafford, didn’t mince words when describing her emotional ride during the Los Angeles Rams’ recent contract negotiations with her husband. While the dust has settled with a restructured deal keeping Stafford at the Rams, Kelly revealed on her podcast, "The Morning After," that her journey through the uncertainty was anything but smooth.

"Holy s--- am I so glad we’re here," she candidly shared, describing her relief after the contract’s announcement last week. The new deal doesn’t extend Stafford’s tenure with the Rams but does significantly boost his salary for the final two years of his original extension.

Kelly admitted, "He’s very good at compartmentalizing everything. Me, on the other hand — I went f---ing mad, I went so crazy." You’ve got to appreciate her honesty — most of us would probably lose it too if our spouse’s career felt like it was hanging by a thread.

Rumors swirled after the 2024 season about whether Stafford would stick with Los Angeles, especially as reports indicated the team wasn’t eager to renegotiate the massive four-year, $160 million contract extension he signed in 2022. The Rams even reportedly gave Stafford the green light to explore his value with other teams — a move that must’ve added fuel to Kelly’s emotional fire.

But last Friday, the Rams announced that both parties agreed to a restructured deal. While the finer details are still under wraps, head coach Sean McVay clarified that there are no added years to the contract, keeping Stafford in Los Angeles through 2026. Kelly praised McVay for his transparency, saying, "I give him so much credit in that. I just felt like he wanted to make sure everything was good for everybody, and I was grateful for that." It’s rare to hear such glowing words about a head coach from a player’s spouse — seems McVay’s leadership isn’t just appreciated on the field.

She also shared how much it mattered to her that Stafford got to stay with the team and coach he loves. "This is where we both wanted to be, and I’m just glad he gets to play for the team and the coach that he wants to end his career with," Kelly added.

Stafford, who threw for 3,762 yards and 20 touchdowns last season, led the Rams to a 10-7 record and a divisional playoff appearance before falling to the eventual Super Bowl champions. Amid the swirling contract talks, the New York Giants were tossed around as a possible trade destination — a juicy tidbit that thankfully didn’t pan out.

The Stafford household can now breathe easy, knowing their future in Los Angeles is secure. As Kelly’s podcast revelations show, behind every football player is a family riding its own emotional rollercoaster during contract negotiations. Here’s hoping the ride stays smooth from here.
