Rep. Maxine Waters urged Trump to investigate Melania Trump's citizenship during a Los Angeles protest, igniting controversy and viral debate over immigration and birthright citizenship.

Democratic California Rep. Maxine Waters stirred the pot this weekend in Los Angeles, suggesting during a protest that former President Donald Trump should investigate and possibly deport former first lady Melania Trump. It was a bold and controversial statement that quickly caught fire online.

Waters, addressing the crowd at an anti-DOGE rally, took aim at Trump’s executive order on birthright citizenship. "When he talks about birthright, and he's going to undo the fact that the Constitution allows those who are born here—even if their parents are undocumented—they have a right to stay in America. If he wants to start looking so closely to find those who were born here and their parents were undocumented, maybe he ought to first look at Melania," she declared.

She didn’t stop there. "We don't know whether or not her parents were documented. And maybe we better just take a look," Waters added, leaving the crowd buzzing.

Melania Trump, born in the former Yugoslavia, became a U.S. citizen in 2006. She holds the distinction of being the first first lady to become a naturalized citizen and only the second first lady born outside the United States. Her parents, Viktor and Amalija Knavs, were sponsored by Melania for green cards and eventually citizenship, officially obtaining their status in 2018. Amalija Knavs passed away in 2024, while Viktor Knavs remains a visible figure at Trump family events.

Waters’ comments came amid protests against the Trump administration's efforts to narrow the scope of birthright citizenship through an executive order, which is currently tied up in court. The order aims to ban individuals born to undocumented immigrants or those on temporary visas from obtaining citizenship.

The rally in Los Angeles drew hundreds of protesters, who marched to the VA hospital on Wilshire Boulevard. The atmosphere was charged as Waters continued her fiery address, saying, "We are here because we are not going to let Trump, we’re not going to let Elon Musk, his co-president, or anybody else take the United States Constitution down." Yes, she really called Musk Trump’s "co-president." That’s one way to keep the crowd entertained.

Clips of Waters’ remarks regarding Melania are now circulating widely on social media, sparking backlash from conservative critics who accuse the congresswoman of crossing a line. TikTok and X are buzzing, with users debating whether Waters’ comments were justified or simply inflammatory.

Fox News Digital reached out to Waters’ office for comment but did not receive an immediate response.

Editor's Comments

Maxine Waters sure knows how to create a headline, but calling for the deportation of a former first lady feels more like a political stunt than a serious critique. Suggesting Melania Trump’s citizenship should be scrutinized not only distracts from the real issues at hand but also risks turning legitimate policy debates into personal vendettas. And Elon Musk as "co-president"? That’s a wild card I wasn’t expecting!
