Canadian traveler with measles sparks alarm in Washington, exposing Seattle airport and public sites. Health officials urge vaccination checks.

Public health officials in Washington state are on high alert after a Canadian traveler, diagnosed with measles, visited multiple public spots across the Seattle area, including the bustling Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. The traveler, whose vaccination status remains a mystery, roamed through Renton, Bellevue, Seattle, Everett, and Woodinville between April 30 and May 3, potentially exposing countless residents to this highly contagious virus.

Measles, a disease that can spread like wildfire before any telltale rash appears, lingers in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves. The Canadian’s itinerary included high-traffic locations like Bellevue Market Place, Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery, Topgolf Renton, and Uwajimaya Seattle Asian Market, among others. Health officials are urging anyone who visited these sites to confirm their vaccination status and stay vigilant for symptoms like fever or unexplained rashes.

This case adds to Washington’s growing measles tally, with five resident cases reported this year and two other non-resident cases handled by Public Health – Seattle and King County. Meagan Kay, a medical epidemiologist, warned of a significant measles resurgence nationwide, with over 1,000 cases reported in 2025—the highest since the early 1990s. Kay emphasized the urgency of vaccination, noting that unvaccinated individuals are playing a risky game with a virus that doesn’t discriminate.

As measles cases climb globally, this incident underscores the fragility of public health in a hyper-connected world. Officials are calling for proactive measures to curb the spread, urging residents to check their immunity and act swiftly if symptoms arise.
