Measles exposure warning issued for Newark Airport after a confirmed case. Officials urge MMR vaccination to prevent outbreak. Symptoms may appear by June 2.
Health officials have sounded the alarm at Newark Airport after a confirmed measles case sparked fears of a potential outbreak. On May 12, an infectious traveler, not a New Jersey resident, passed through the busy hub, prompting the New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH) to issue an urgent exposure warning. Travelers who were at the airport during specific times and locations may have been exposed, with symptoms possibly appearing as late as June 2.
Measles, a highly contagious virus, spreads through coughs or sneezes, lingering in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves. Symptoms include high fever, cough, runny nose, red watery eyes, and a telltale rash that starts on the face and creeps downward. The NJDOH is urging everyone to stay vigilant and check their vaccination status, emphasizing that the MMR vaccine—two doses for full protection—is the best defense.
Unvaccinated or partially vaccinated individuals face the highest risk, and officials are pushing for parents to ensure kids are up to date, especially before international travel. Infants as young as six months can get a dose before jetting off. If you suspect exposure or spot symptoms, contact a healthcare provider before heading to a clinic to avoid spreading the virus further. As of May 15, no additional cases have been reported in New Jersey, but the situation remains fluid.
This scare comes hot on the heels of an air traffic control mess at Newark, piling more stress on travelers. The NJDOH’s message is clear: get vaccinated, stay alert, and let’s keep this virus grounded.
