Dallas Cowboys star Micah Parsons defends agent David Mulugheta after Jerry Jones downplays his role in contract talks, setting the stage for a dramatic extension negotiation.

Micah Parsons, the electrifying All-Pro pass rusher for the Dallas Cowboys, is gearing up for a potential blockbuster contract extension. However, the process has already brought some unexpected drama, thanks to Cowboys owner Jerry Jones' eyebrow-raising remarks about Parsons' agent, David Mulugheta.

Jones claimed he spent "five, six hours" directly discussing contract terms with Parsons, apparently bypassing the agent. In a statement sure to raise some pulses, Jones said, "The agent is not a factor here or something to worry about. And I don't know his name." He later clarified that he did not intend to "demean" Mulugheta but emphasized that the negotiations were between him and Parsons, not the agent.

Parsons, however, wasn’t having any of it. The defensive superstar took to X (formerly Twitter) to defend Mulugheta in no uncertain terms. "Facts!! David is the best, and I will not be doing any deal without @DavidMulugheta involved!" Parsons wrote. "Like anyone with good sense, I hired experts for a reason. There is no one I trust more when it comes to negotiating contracts than David! There will be no backdoors in this contract negotiation."

Mulugheta, a powerhouse in the sports management world and president of team sports at Athletes First, has a long track record of landing major contracts for his clients, including Deshaun Watson's groundbreaking fully guaranteed deal with the Cleveland Browns. Clearly, Parsons feels he’s in good hands.

Meanwhile, Jones touted his own history of direct negotiations, recalling past deals with Cowboys legends like Emmitt Smith and Deion Sanders. "Frankly, most people that negotiate with me will tell you that it was better off than negotiating with anybody else," Jones remarked. "We, by the way, have maintained relationships that have lasted well past their playing days." Classic Jerry, always ready to remind everyone who's really in charge.

Parsons, who’s been a wrecking ball since entering the league, is on track for a lucrative payday. The Cowboys exercised his fifth-year option in April 2024, setting him up for a hefty $21.324 million salary in 2025. With double-digit sacks in each of his four NFL seasons, including 12 sacks last year over 13 games, he’s just getting started.

As negotiations heat up, one thing is crystal clear: Parsons isn’t going into this fight alone, and he’s made it known that his agent is non-negotiable. How this plays out between the Cowboys, Parsons, and their larger-than-life owner will be one of the most compelling storylines to watch.
