North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has reportedly overseen tests of newly developed AI-powered suicide drones, signaling a chilling evolution in the country’s military capabilities. According to North Korean state media, Kim has called for ramping up production of these unmanned weapons.

Photos released by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) show Kim inspecting upgraded reconnaissance drones, capable of detecting tactical targets and monitoring activities both on land and at sea. The dictator emphasized that unmanned systems and artificial intelligence must be prioritized in modern arms development.

The tests highlight Kim’s increasing focus on drones as a cornerstone of North Korea's military arsenal. Images from the tests depict a fixed-wing drone zeroing in on a tank-shaped target before exploding in flames—a dramatic demonstration of its destructive potential. The reconnaissance drones also showcased their ability to track multiple targets and monitor troop movements, which could bolster North Korea’s intelligence-gathering operations.

Kim’s vision for AI-powered military systems doesn’t stop at reconnaissance. The new suicide drones are reportedly designed for various attack missions and feature advanced AI capabilities, although specifics remain undisclosed.

The dictator was also photographed walking near what appeared to be a surveillance aircraft resembling the U.S. RQ-4 Global Hawk, parked on a tarmac. Other images showed Kim inspecting a four-engine aircraft equipped with a radar dome, which analysts suspect is a converted Russian-made Il-76 cargo plane tailored for early-warning operations. This adaptation could help mitigate limitations posed by North Korea’s mountainous terrain.

The drone tests come on the heels of North Korea unveiling its first nuclear-powered submarine—a move that has raised alarms about escalating security threats to South Korea and the United States. Furthermore, North Korea has reportedly been supplying missiles, artillery, and ammunition to Russia, fueling speculation about potential technology transfers in return.

South Korean officials have warned that North Korea could intensify its weapons supplies to Russia depending on the state of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Notably, North Korea has sent approximately 11,000 military personnel to support Russia’s war effort, marking its first large-scale involvement in a conflict since the Korean War. South Korean assessments suggest that around 4,000 of these troops have been killed or wounded.
