Barack Obama challenges affluent liberals to face tough choices in a shifting political landscape, urging resistance to divisive policies.
Former President Barack Obama delivered a sharp wake-up call to affluent liberals during a rare public appearance in Hartford, Connecticut, urging them to brace for tougher times. Speaking with historian Heather Cox Richardson, Obama suggested that the era of unchallenged progressive ideals is over. "During my presidency, you could feel righteous without sacrifice," he remarked, noting how liberals could enjoy wealth, travel to elite destinations like Aspen or Milan, and still claim progressive credentials.
Now, Obama warned, priorities will be tested. "You might lose donors or see your law firm’s billings dip," he said, hinting at the personal costs of standing firm against current political currents. Without naming President Donald Trump, Obama’s comments carried pointed critiques, especially on immigration. In a recent X post, he decried the demonization of immigrants, reflecting on his administration’s DACA policy as a balance of law and humanity.
Obama’s call to action targeted businesses, universities, and law firms, urging them to resist policies misaligned with inclusive values. Yet, some progressives, like Adam Green of the Progressive Change Institute, expressed frustration, arguing Obama’s voice—still a powerful megaphone—has been too quiet in opposing Trump’s agenda. The former president’s remarks signal a shift: comfortable liberalism may no longer come cheap.
