A helicopter in South Africa crash-landed after a penguin in a cardboard box triggered a control mishap. No injuries, but the incident highlights crucial cargo safety lessons.
Only in 2025: An innocent-looking penguin in a cardboard box was at the center of a helicopter mishap in South Africa’s Eastern Cape earlier this year, as revealed in a new investigation by the South African Civil Aviation Authority.
On January 19, a pilot and three passengers were returning from an aerial survey over Bird Island, when a specialist on board requested the transport of one of the local penguins. The bird was placed inside a cardboard box—hardly the kind of pet carrier you’d hope for mid-flight.
According to the report, while the pilot did assess the risks of the flight, he skipped over the detail about having a live penguin on board. That oversight would soon prove costly.
The penguin, box and all, was held by a passenger in the front seat. Mid-flight, the box slipped and slid onto the helicopter's cyclic pitch control lever. In a split second, the lever was pushed to the far right, causing the helicopter to roll and plummet to the ground from about 50 feet up.
Miraculously, nobody was hurt—not even the penguin. The chopper, however, didn’t fare as well and suffered major damage.
The investigation was blunt: improper containment of the penguin and lack of a secure crate created a dangerous situation. The report emphasized the importance of proper cargo handling to prevent incidents like this, where a penguin’s unexpected journey nearly turned tragic.
Let’s just say, next time, maybe skip the cardboard and opt for a proper penguin crate—aviation and arctic birds clearly don’t mix well with makeshift packaging.
