Billy Horschel hit a fan with an errant shot at the RBC Heritage, then signed her leg as a memorable gesture during a lively PGA Tour event in South Carolina.

Billy Horschel found himself in the spotlight for something other than his golf swing at the RBC Heritage on Thursday. In a moment that blended pain with humor, a fan walked away from the tournament with a one-of-a-kind souvenir—an autograph right on her leg, courtesy of Horschel's errant tee shot.

The RBC Heritage, held at Harbour Town Golf Links in South Carolina, is the first big event after Rory McIlroy’s recent Masters win, so the energy around the greens was already buzzing. But on the par-4 10th hole, Horschel’s drive veered too far right and struck a woman in the leg. The ball ricocheted back toward the fairway, finally settling in the rough—honestly, not the bounce anyone wants, least of all the fan who took the hit.

Unaware at first, Horschel soon learned about his unintended target as he approached his ball. He did the gentlemanly thing: signed her leg and shared a hug. Not many people can say they’ve left a golf tournament with both a bruise and a signed memento. Talk about a unique story for her next group chat.

For Horschel, it was just one highlight (or lowlight, depending on whom you ask) in an otherwise tough day on the course. He finished the round even, tying for 51st with nine others—certainly not where he hoped to be. Meanwhile, Justin Thomas led the board with a scorching 10-under 61, and Russell Henley along with two-time Masters champ Scottie Scheffler trailed by just three strokes.

This year’s RBC Heritage is one of the PGA Tour’s signature events, meaning there’s no cut line, so Horschel still has time to climb the leaderboard—assuming he keeps future shots away from the spectators.

I have to hand it to the woman who got whacked by Horschel’s tee shot—she managed to turn a painful accident into a collector’s item. Most of us just get a bruise, but she gets a story and an autograph! If only all sports injuries came with a celebrity signature, maybe ER waiting rooms would be a lot more cheerful.
