Pittsburgh Pirates ace Paul Skenes pledges $100 per strikeout to the Gary Sinise Foundation in 2025, supporting veterans and first responders. Fans can join the charitable campaign.

Pittsburgh Pirates star pitcher Paul Skenes is kicking off the 2025 season with a bang—both on the mound and for a cause. Named as the team’s opening day starter for Thursday’s matchup against the Miami Marlins, Skenes is bringing his A-game to make a difference.

The 2024 National League Rookie of the Year has pledged $100 to the Gary Sinise Foundation for every strikeout he throws this season. This marks the second year of his partnership with the organization, which supports veterans and first responders. If his stats from last season—170 strikeouts and a third-place finish in National League Cy Young Award voting—are any indication, this campaign is set to make quite an impact.

"I am very excited to partner again with the Gary Sinise Foundation and help our veterans and first responders during the 2025 season," Skenes said in a statement. "GSF provides an amazing platform to honor and support those who have done so much for me. I look forward to another year of supporting this amazing cause."

Founded by actor and humanitarian Gary Sinise in 2011, the Gary Sinise Foundation has spent over a decade expanding its service efforts for military, veteran, and first responder communities. Sinise expressed his appreciation for Skenes’ continued support, saying, "A big thank you and much gratitude to Paul for his awesome support of GSF and for this amazing offer." He even jokingly asked Skenes to "go easy" on his beloved Cubs this season.

Fans are also invited to join the campaign to raise $100,000. The top donor by the Pirates’ home opener on April 4 will win a special meet-and-greet with Skenes, along with tickets to the game against the New York Yankees. Talk about a grand slam for giving back!

Skenes’ dedication to both his sport and charitable causes is a refreshing reminder that the game isn’t just about wins and losses—it’s about making a real difference. Here’s hoping his fastball continues to strike out batters and inspire generosity.

Paul Skenes is not just a powerhouse on the mound; he’s clearly a class act off the field too. Pairing his strikeouts with charity donations feels like a win-win. And can we take a moment to appreciate Gary Sinise’s cheeky Cubs comment? Even celebs can’t resist a little baseball banter.
