Pope Francis suffers a bronchospasm, requiring non-invasive ventilation but responding well. Vatican says he remains under careful observation as prayers and support pour in.
The Vatican announced that Pope Francis experienced a setback in his health. He suffered a bronchospasm, leading to vomiting and inhalation. The Pope is now receiving non-invasive ventilation and showing positive responses. Sources within the Vatican indicate he's using a mask covering his nose and mouth to assist with breathing, avoiding intubation.
Throughout the day, the Pope remained alert and oriented, according to the Vatican. However, sources emphasize that he is not yet out of danger, and doctors need to fully assess the impact of the recent episode.
Before the breathing crisis, Pope Francis spent his morning alternating between prayer and respiratory physiotherapy. He also received the Eucharist. It's a tough situation, and you can't help but feel for the guy.
This incident follows a previous episode nearly three weeks ago, where the 88-year-old pontiff experienced breathing difficulties. On Saturday, he had an "isolated" incident involving coughing and vomiting. He is now reportedly using a different type of mask and breathing normally.
Earlier today, Vice President JD Vance addressed the Pope's health at the annual National Prayer Breakfast, offering a prayer for the 88-year-old. Despite acknowledging their political differences, Vance stated he has been praying for Pope Francis daily.
Vice President Vance invited the attendees to join him in praying for Pope Francis' health. He expressed hope for the Pope's recovery and recalled the Pope's impactful sermon during the COVID-19 pandemic.
"I think all of us can remember that moment of the Holy Father standing in an empty Saint Peter's Square, holding the Eucharist above his head and giving a sermon that I return to consistently because it was incredibly meaningful to me at the time. It remains meaningful today," Vance said before going on to read part of the homily the pope gave in March 2020.
The Pope has previously criticized the Trump administration, which Vice President Vance acknowledged in his address. Earlier this month, Pope Francis condemned the administration's planned mass deportations of migrants, predicting it "will end badly." It's interesting to see political figures setting aside differences to offer support during health crises.
