Brief

Portland protest turns riot near ICE facility, with three arrested and four officers injured amid clashes.

In Portland, Oregon, a protest that started as a peaceful "No Kings" demonstration spiraled into chaos Saturday night, resulting in a declared riot near an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility. Three individuals were arrested, and four officers were injured as tensions flared outside the federal building in South Portland.

The day began with thousands marching through the city, voicing dissent in what authorities described as a significant free speech event. By 6 p.m., however, the mood shifted when a federal officer reportedly sustained an injury, prompting a police response. Although the officer ultimately didn’t require medical attention, the situation escalated rapidly.

According to Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin, a mob hurled fireworks, smoke grenades, and rocks at federal law enforcement, shattering glass and breaching the ICE facility. Portland Police Bureau (PPB) declared a riot due to ongoing criminal activity, emphasizing that arrests targeted only those engaged in violence or property destruction, not peaceful protesters.

Among the arrested was Sabian Crisantos, 25, charged with attempted assault of a public safety officer. Tyson Kahnert, 20, faced multiple charges, including criminal mischief and harassment, after allegedly throwing a rock at the ICE building. Cory Oien, 38, was nabbed for theft and driving under the influence after moving traffic control devices. All three were booked into Multnomah County Detention Center, with more arrests possible as investigations continue.

This clash underscores the volatile intersection of protest and policing, where a call for change can ignite into confrontation. Portland’s history of unrest near federal facilities remains a flashpoint, raising questions about balancing free expression with public safety.

Portland’s ICE facility must feel like it’s got a permanent RSVP for chaos. Why do fireworks and rocks keep crashing the protest party? Maybe it’s time for a new venue—or a better script for free speech that doesn’t end in handcuffs.
