Rep. Don Bacon strongly supports Ukraine against Russia, emphasizing U.S. aid, national security interests, and framing the conflict as a fight for democracy and freedom.

Rep. Don Bacon, R-Neb., isn’t mincing words when it comes to his stance on Russia and Ukraine. In a fiery post on X (formerly Twitter), the congressman declared that "real Republicans know that Putin’s Russia hates the West and freedom." A bold statement, but Bacon seems determined to draw a clear line in the sand.

He elaborated further, adding, "We also know that Ukraine wants democracy, free markets, and rule of law. We stand with right vs evil. Reagan, Churchill, Eisenhower… that is our legacy. I won’t walk away from it." It’s a rallying cry that ties his stance to some historical heavyweights.

The U.S. has funneled substantial aid into Ukraine since the beginning of Russia’s invasion, and Bacon has made it clear where he stands on the matter. Speaking on CSPAN’s "Washington Journal," he warned that allowing Russia to win would cost the U.S. "a lot more money" in the long run. According to him, it’s in America’s "national security interest for Ukraine to win."

He’s also taken to the platform to push back against any suggestion of U.S. troops on the ground, stating, "The U.S. has no troops in Ukraine and no one is advocating for that. We want to arm Ukraine so they can defeat this Putin invasion." Bacon further emphasized the global stakes, noting, "What happens if Ukraine falls? Do you think it ends there? China is watching how we handle this too." Yikes. Nothing like a little geopolitical ripple effect to keep everyone up at night.

In another post, Bacon dug into the moral dimension of the conflict, saying, "They are fighting for their freedom just like we have in our history. I’m for a just peace, not surrender nor slavery." His rhetoric paints the battle as one of good versus evil, a sentiment he doubled down on when responding to a question about the cost of ousting Russia. "Read Clausewitz. It’s changing the will of the adversary. Hard to measure. But being weak strengthens the adversaries’ will. It’s more about good vs evil and being on [the] right side of history," he replied.

Bacon’s outspoken support for Ukraine and his criticism of Russia is bound to stir up further debate, both within his party and across the political spectrum. Whether one agrees with him or not, one thing is clear: he’s not backing down.

Don Bacon is serving up some serious Cold War vibes with all the references to Reagan and Churchill, isn’t he? His ‘good vs evil’ framing is compelling, but it also feels like a political high-wire act. While his stance lines up with traditional Republican foreign policy, it’s definitely stirring the pot in today’s fractured GOP. The historical shoutouts are a nice touch, though—nothing like invoking Reagan to fire up the base.
