The NFL is about to get a whole lot more interesting as the new football year approaches! Teams hungry for a QB1 have some intriguing options coming their way well before the draft. It's like a quarterback buffet out there!
Several teams are quarterback-needy this offseason, some looking for a fresh starter, others just wanting a reliable veteran to keep things steady.
The free agency market this year seems to have something for everyone, whether you're after a star or a solid backup.
Sam Darnold, once the golden boy of the 2018 NFL Draft, is now leading the pack of free agent quarterbacks after a pretty impressive season with the Minnesota Vikings.
After inking a $10 million, one-year deal with Minnesota, Darnold really stepped up, throwing for 4,319 yards, 35 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. He even became the first quarterback to snag 14 wins in his first season with a team. Talk about making an entrance!
Even with a somewhat bumpy ending, including a playoff loss, Darnold is likely to land a starting gig somewhere, and who knows, it might just be back in Minnesota.
The Pittsburgh Steelers haven’t quite found their quarterback groove since Ben Roethlisberger hung up his cleats in 2022. They had a couple of options this year, but neither really hit the mark.
Justin Fields is in the mix. He joined the Steelers after a trade from the Chicago Bears. Even though he started the season behind Russell Wilson, he got his chance when Wilson was sidelined with an injury.
The two quarterbacks ended up splitting time, with Wilson taking over again towards the end of the season. Fields wrapped up the season with six starts, 1,106 passing yards, five touchdowns, and just one interception in 10 games.
The Steelers have mentioned they're keen on signing one of these quarterbacks when they hit free agency. Who it will be is still a mystery, but Wilson is definitely going to be the hot commodity if he becomes available.
After recovering from a calf injury during training camp, Russell Wilson was back as the starter for the final 11 games of the 2024 season. He completed 63.7% of his passes for 2,482 yards, with 16 touchdowns and five interceptions. Plus, he ran for 155 yards and two scores.
Despite his achievements and consistency, the team president, Art Rooney II, has hinted that age might be a factor in their decision. If they move on from Wilson, he could reunite with his former Seattle Seahawks head coach, Pete Carroll, who recently joined the Raiders.
Aaron Rodgers isn't a free agent just yet, but he’s likely to snag a starting job if he decides to return next season. With one year left on his contract, he’s expected to be released after March 12, when the NFL's new league year kicks off.
Even with a four-time league MVP, the Jets still fell short, but Rodgers still managed to put up some decent numbers, throwing for 3,897 passing yards and 28 touchdowns.

It's fascinating to see how quarterback fortunes can change so quickly in the NFL. One minute you're the prized pick, the next you're fighting for a spot. This free agency period is going to be a wild ride for sure!
