Ex-Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers slides to the NFL's seventh round. His agent slams the league's reasoning, while Ewers vows to turn the snub into motivation.

Quinn Ewers, the former Texas Longhorns quarterback, rolled the dice on his NFL dreams instead of sticking around in college ball. Turns out, the draft gods weren’t exactly feeling generous: Ewers, initially eyed as a mid-draft pick, slipped all the way to the seventh round before the Miami Dolphins swooped him up. Now, he’s staring down a battle with Zach Wilson for that ever-glamorous backup QB spot.

Ewers and his agent, Ron Slavin, are less than thrilled with how things went down. Slavin, in a chat with ESPN, didn’t hold back about the so-called "nightmare" scenario: The Las Vegas Raiders, a team he thought would bite early, passed on Ewers in favor of two quarterbacks from a lower division—ouch. He was also eyeing the Seattle Seahawks as a potential home, but that didn’t pan out either.

As the rounds dragged on, Slavin says he was working the phones with about half the NFL to figure out why Ewers was falling like a smartphone with butterfingers. He claims the consensus was that Ewers was too big of a name to sit on the sidelines holding a clipboard—according to him, that logic is, well, total chickens---. (If you ask me, the NFL draft logic sometimes feels like it’s running on dial-up.)

Ewers, for his part, isn’t sulking. Instead, he says he’s fired up and ready to prove himself, especially after being the last quarterback picked. "There's definitely motivation and fuel. A lot of it," Ewers said, admitting this is the first time he’s not buried under sky-high expectations. Sometimes, the underdog script really writes itself.

For those who missed the backstory: Ewers was a top talent in high school, first committed to Ohio State, then transferred to Texas where he wrapped up his college career. In 2024, he threw for 3,472 yards and 31 touchdowns, even carrying the Longhorns to the College Football Playoff, though they bowed out to Ohio State in the semifinals.

Now, it’s Miami or bust for Ewers. One thing’s for sure—he’s got something to prove, and maybe the NFL’s clipboard holders should watch their backs.
