REAL ID law finally takes effect, sending millions to DMVs nationwide. Low compliance rates spark panic, long lines, and travel chaos ahead of summer.

Brace yourselves, America: REAL ID is finally here to make your DMV nightmares a reality—again. After two decades of government foot-dragging, the long-delayed REAL ID Act is set to take effect next week, and millions are realizing they may need to face their local Department of Motor Vehicles. Whether you call it the DMV, DPS, HSMV, BMV, or some other alphabet soup, the experience is universally dreaded.

Starting May 7, all U.S. residents will need a REAL ID-compliant form of identification to board any commercial flight (domestic or international) or enter federal buildings. What’s a REAL ID? It’s a state-issued driver’s license or ID card that meets tough new federal standards—meaning you’ll need to dig up a pile of documents, like proof of state residency, a certified birth certificate, and more. Oh, and look for a star or special symbol in the corner to know if you’ve got the right card.

For many, this has triggered a last-minute scramble. Some states, especially New Jersey, are reporting total appointment droughts at their DMVs. New Jersey’s REAL ID compliance rate is the lowest in the country at just 17% last month. Pennsylvania sits at 26%, and New York is at 43%. Less than half of New Yorkers are ready to fly—or, you know, enter a federal building without a song and dance.

The national picture isn’t much better: as of January 2024, only 56% of licenses met the new requirements, and even the Department of Homeland Security is crossing its fingers that the number will rise to 66% by next week. In the meantime, horror stories abound—missed appointments, endless lines, and a steady stream of folks just finding out their ID won’t cut it at the airport gate.

Some states are pleading for more time. Lawmakers in Kentucky warn that rural residents, seniors, and families face extra hurdles, and only about 40% of Kentuckians have a REAL ID. Their message: we’re trying, but we’re not there yet.

The stakes are high. The TSA has warned that travelers without a compliant ID may face longer wait times—or might not get through at all. With summer travel season looming, millions could be grounded or forced into bureaucratic purgatory. And it’s not just airports: federal buildings will also turn away those who haven’t made the cut.

Here’s the kicker: at least 17 states have compliance rates under 50%, and 30 states haven’t even hit 70%. If DMV lines were bad before, just wait until next week. America, hope you like waiting rooms!
