The Boston Red Sox shift Rafael Devers to designated hitter, giving new signing Alex Bregman the third base spot. Manager Alex Cora stands firm amid team lineup controversy.

The Boston Red Sox are making waves this spring training, and it’s not just about their game strategy—it’s about where their star players will stand on the diamond. Rafael Devers, a cornerstone of the team, has found himself in a bit of an awkward shuffle as Alex Bregman, newly signed on a lucrative three-year, $120 million deal, steps into the spotlight to claim third base. The drama? Devers isn’t exactly thrilled about it.

Manager Alex Cora, however, appears resolute in his decisions for the team’s lineup. According to his latest update, Devers is "probably not" playing a single game at third base before spring training concludes. Instead, it seems Devers is poised to slide into the role of designated hitter, a move that signals a clear vote of confidence in Bregman’s defensive skillset.

Devers did not shy away from voicing his opinions earlier in the season, declaring through an interpreter, "Third base is my position. That’s what I’ve played. I don’t know what their plans are." While his frank remarks sparked a whirlwind of debate among fans and analysts, his tune softened as the preseason progressed. "I’m good to do whatever they want me to do. I’m here to help," Devers later said, striking a more team-focused approach.

It’s hard to ignore the numbers that back this shift. Devers, a three-time All-Star, posted a defensive metric of minus-six outs above average last season, a stark contrast to Bregman’s positive six outs. While Devers insists he works hard at the position, the Red Sox brass clearly sees Bregman as the man to hold down third base as they aim for a strong postseason showing in 2025.

Not everyone is buying into the transition, though. First baseman Triston Casas chimed in, suggesting third base is Devers’ rightful domain and that Bregman should instead fill the void at second base. But with Bregman yet to see any time at second during spring training, that idea seems to be more wishful thinking than reality.

The Red Sox, after missing the playoffs in 2024, need their lineup to click, and this decision underscores their commitment to a strategic overhaul. For now, Opening Day is shaping up to be a showcase of Bregman at third and Devers swinging the bat as the team’s full-time designated hitter. Whether this move pays off remains to be seen, but one thing’s for sure—it’s never dull in Red Sox Nation.
