Brief

Rep. Shri Thanedar introduces seven articles of impeachment against President Trump, citing a 'clear and present danger.' GOP House likely to block the move.

Rep. Shri Thanedar of Michigan made headlines Monday by introducing not one, not two, but seven articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump. Thanedar didn't mince words, accusing Trump of being a "clear and present danger" to the Constitution and democracy.

According to Thanedar, the articles cover a buffet of alleged misdeeds: Obstruction of Justice and Abuse of Executive Power, Usurpation of Appropriations Power, Abuse of Trade Powers and International Aggression, Violation of First Amendment Rights, Creation of an Unlawful Office, Bribery and Corruption, and the ever-dramatic Tyrannical Overreach. Someone clearly had a busy weekend drafting that list.

"His unlawful actions have subverted the justice system, violated the separation of powers, and placed personal power and self-interest above public service. We cannot wait for more damage to be done. Congress must act," Thanedar said in his statement.

The White House, for its part, fired back through spokesperson Liz Huston, insisting Trump's actions are "fully lawful" and rooted in the people's will. Huston also accused Democrats of prioritizing "illegal immigrants over the safety, security, and well-being of hardworking American citizens," calling the impeachment effort a "reckless political act." If political theater was an Olympic sport, both sides would be in medal contention.

Despite all the drama, the impeachment effort is widely expected to stall out in the GOP-controlled House. If recent history is any guide, this push will likely join the list of ambitious but ultimately doomed attempts, as Trump's previous two impeachments both failed to result in a Senate conviction.

Fun fact: Rep. Thanedar was born in India and became a U.S. citizen in 1988. He joined the House of Representatives in early 2023, and clearly, he's not easing into the job.

You have to admire Thanedar's energy—seven articles of impeachment out of the gate! At this rate, he’ll need color-coded binders just to keep track. The House may be a political battlefield, but sometimes it feels more like a soap opera with a C-SPAN subscription.
