Rep. Torres Slams Silence on Hamas Atrocities, Questions Humanitarian Claims

Rep. Ritchie Torres, D-N.Y., a fierce advocate against antisemitism, delivered a powerful statement on Wednesday, calling out those who remain silent on the atrocities committed by Hamas in Israel on October 7, 2023. He argued that such silence disqualifies anyone from claiming the mantle of humanitarianism.

"If you refuse to condemn Hamas for the murder, maiming, mutilation, rape, torture, and abduction of thousands of Jews and Israelis on October 7, then you have no business calling yourself a humanitarian," Torres declared on social media. He went further, asserting that a humanitarianism which overlooks Jewish suffering is tainted by antisemitism and lacks true compassion.

Torres, a consistent supporter of Israel, has repeatedly pointed to Hamas as the primary obstacle to peace in the region. Earlier this month, he criticized the international tendency to scapegoat Israel while ignoring Hamas’ role in initiating and prolonging conflict. His stance is clear: antisemitism remains a profound and deadly affliction on humanity’s conscience.

In recent posts, Torres also tackled the misuse of terms like ‘apartheid’ when selectively applied to Israel, suggesting such rhetoric is more about delegitimizing the Jewish state than offering constructive critique.
