Rep. Troy Nehls leads a Republican censure effort against Rep. Al Green after his disruptive outburst during Trump’s speech, sparking political controversy in Congress.
FIRST ON FOX: A whirlwind resolution by Rep. Troy Nehls, R-TX, is making its rounds among Republican lawmakers this Wednesday, aiming to censure Rep. Al Green, D-TX, following his dramatic removal from President Donald Trump's speech. The Texas Democrat didn't just ruffle feathers—he plucked the whole bird.
According to sources, Nehls is spearheading the move to hold Green accountable for what the resolution accuses as "willfully disrupting the joint session," staying defiant, and tarnishing the reputation of the United States Congress. The draft text, viewed by Fox News Digital, is reportedly expected to go public later today.
The 77-year-old Green made quite the scene during Trump's joint address to Congress on Tuesday night, heckling the president with shouts of, "You have no mandate," as Trump emphasized Republican victories. House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-LA, wasted no time instructing the U.S. Sergeant-At-Arms to remove Green from the chamber.
Even after his ejection, Green showed no signs of backing down. Speaking with the White House press pool on the Capitol's first floor, he declared, "I'm willing to suffer whatever punishment is available to me. I didn't say to anyone, don't punish me. I've said I'll accept the punishment." He justified the outburst as standing up against Trump's proposed cuts to Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security, moves he described as unacceptable.
Republicans, however, were not in a forgiving mood. The House Freedom Caucus announced plans to file its own censure resolution against Green, with GOP lawmakers slamming his actions. Rep. Buddy Carter, R-GA, called the incident "disappointing," insisting that Green's behavior displayed a lack of decorum and respect for the presidency. House GOP Policy Committee Chair Kevin Hern, R-OK, echoed similar sentiments, labeling the disruption as "ridiculous."
Meanwhile, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-LA, stated that leadership would examine potential disciplinary actions against Green, a move that Speaker Johnson appeared to support as well. Clearly, the GOP is not in the mood for theatrics during one of their crowning moments.
Fox News Digital reached out to Green's office but received no immediate comment. Whether Green's defiance will strengthen his base or lead to further political consequences remains to be seen, but for now, the Congressional drama continues to unfold.

Al Green's bold protest is the kind of political theater that grabs headlines, but it also raises a bigger question: When does passionate dissent cross the line into chaos? While his message about protecting social programs might resonate with some, the spectacle of being forcibly removed from the chamber certainly overshadowed it. Maybe next time, he can make his point without getting escorted out.
