Benji and Joel Madden, with Rob Lowe, discuss their 'healthy fear' and deep respect for their strong wives, highlighting marriage dynamics and shared values on Rob Lowe's podcast.
Benji and Joel Madden recently confessed to having a "healthy fear" of their wives during a chat on SiriusXM’s Literally! With Rob Lowe. Rob Lowe, host of the show, chimed in, adding how "all three of us are married to strong women." Turns out, even Hollywood’s leading men know when to tread lightly!
Lowe, 61, has been married to Sheryl Berkoff since 1991, while Benji tied the knot with Cameron Diaz in 2015. Joel and Nicole Richie joined the club in 2010. These three couples clearly have a shared dynamic of mutual respect—and a little healthy fear to keep things spicy.
"When you think about all of our similarities, they are core stuff about how we view life, how we view success, what we want to do with our time, how we wanna invest in others and what's important to us," Lowe reflected during the conversation. He added that their shared values create a unique bond. Honestly, it sounds like these guys might have their own secret support group for navigating married life with powerhouse women.
Benji described their wives as "forces of nature," saying, "They don’t want a pushover guy, but you also have to not have the ego." Imagine being a rockstar and still knowing your limits—that's humility on a whole new level.
Joel echoed his brother’s sentiments, adding, "We all respect our wives. They are absolutely our counterparts, and we all have a healthy fear of our wives. In the best way." He elaborated on how Nicole Richie completely "runs the show" in their marriage, stating, "She gave me a way deeper, richer life because of the aspects of my life that she oversees." Okay, props to Joel for recognizing the magic of teamwork in a relationship.
Benji went on to say that his marriage to Cameron Diaz felt like his world was "right side up" for the first time. He added, "They're formidable. You don’t wanna f--- with them. I want no part of running afoul of any of our three wives." Lowe hilariously agreed, saying, "That’s the queen. Go against my wife? Good luck. I don’t even need to get involved." If these quotes don’t scream "happy wife, happy life," I don’t know what does.
Diaz, who shares two children with Benji—daughter Raddix and son Cardinal—has stirred headlines in the past for suggesting couples normalize separate bedrooms or even separate homes. On Molly Sims’ "Lipstick on the Rim" podcast, she said, "To me, I would literally—I have my house, you have yours. We have the family house in the middle." She clarified that her views have evolved since marrying Benji, saying, "I don’t feel that way now, because my husband is so wonderful." Talk about a plot twist.
Meanwhile, Nicole Richie, 43, shares two children with Joel—daughter Harlow, 17, and son Sparrow, 15. With families like these, it’s clear these guys are holding their own in marriages that blend celebrity status with deep, personal connection. And if you ask Rob, Joel, or Benji, they wouldn’t have it any other way.

Honestly, this whole 'healthy fear' concept is equal parts amusing and heartwarming. It’s refreshing to hear these super-successful men openly acknowledging the strength of their wives—and how it keeps them grounded. Also, can we talk about Cameron Diaz’s separate houses idea? That’s bold, but hey, to each their own!
