Dan Simmons, affectionately known as "Chief," has passed away at the age of 78, leaving behind a legacy that spans over four decades with the New Orleans Saints. Simmons, who served as the team's equipment manager for an impressive 42 years, passed away in his hometown of St. Louis on Friday, the team confirmed. He retired in 2014 and was the longest-serving employee in the franchise’s history, a feat that speaks volumes about his dedication.
Beyond his equipment management duties, Simmons also spent 10 years as the Saints alumni and legends coordinator, a role that further cemented his influence within the organization. Saints Owner Gayle Benson expressed her condolences, stating, "Our thoughts are with Elaine and the Simmons family as we have suffered a significant loss with the passing of Dan. He played an integral role in the daily operations of the equipment room and locker room. Dan was a proud New Orleans Saint and touched the lives of thousands of players, coaches, and staff members throughout his tenure, making significant contributions to this franchise. He will be greatly missed."
Dan Simmons was not just a football stalwart; he was a Vietnam veteran who served in the Navy, showcasing his commitment and discipline both on and off the field. Former Saints quarterback Archie Manning shared heartfelt words, describing Simmons as "the very best" and adding, "He was so kind and sweet and humble. He just did his job and never sought attention. If everyone with the Saints had done their jobs as well as Chief did when I played, we would have won Super Bowls."
Simmons’ tenure included a staggering 858 games across preseason, regular season, and postseason play. Notably, he was part of the team during the 2009 season when the Saints clinched their first Super Bowl victory against the Indianapolis Colts.
Chief is survived by his wife Elaine, three children, and four grandchildren. His contributions to the Saints and the broader NFL community will undoubtedly be remembered for years to come. Rest in peace, Chief.
