Sen. Steve Daines’ bill ensures federal cemeteries stay open on holidays, allowing families to honor fallen heroes on days like Memorial Day and Christmas.

In a move that tugs at the heartstrings, Sen. Steve Daines, R-Mont., is pushing a bill to keep over 170 federal cemeteries open on holidays like Memorial Day, Christmas, and Independence Day. Currently, most of these sacred grounds, managed by the Department of Veterans Affairs and National Park Service, lock their gates on major holidays, leaving families unable to visit their fallen loved ones. The exception? Arlington National Cemetery, which opens for Memorial Day and Veterans Day but remains closed for others.

Daines’ legislation, introduced Thursday, aims to change that. “These holidays are when we pause to honor the brave souls who gave everything for our freedoms,” he told WTFNewsRoom. “Keeping these cemeteries open ensures families can pay their respects when it matters most.” The bill addresses a poignant gap in how we honor our heroes, whose sacrifices began with the establishment of national cemeteries during the Civil War for fallen Union soldiers.

From Montana’s Fort Missoula Post Cemetery to the hallowed grounds of Yellowstone National Cemetery, the bill would ensure access to these sites for reflection and tribute. With over 170 national cemeteries across the U.S., operated by the VA, Department of Defense, and National Park Service, this change could touch countless families. It’s a small but profound gesture to keep the memory of our heroes alive on the days we celebrate as a nation.

Daines is onto something—locking cemetery gates on Memorial Day is like canceling the Super Bowl on game day. Let’s open those gates and honor our heroes properly. Why should families wait to lay flowers when the calendar screams ‘remember’?
