Archaeologists uncover rare 18th-century heraldic tiles under a Polish monastery, revealing insights into monastic life and craftsmanship.
In a thrilling archaeological breakthrough, researchers in Poland have unearthed a treasure trove of artifacts beneath the historic Basilica of the Birth of the Virgin Mary in Chełm, about 40 miles east of Lublin. This 13th-century medieval church, now Roman Catholic, has revealed secrets from its 17th-century Basilian monastery, offering a vivid snapshot of monastic life in the 18th century.
The excavation, conducted near the basilica, uncovered hundreds of rare heraldic tiles hidden beneath the monastery’s wooden floors. These green and brown glazed tiles, crafted between 1711 and 1730, bear intricate designs, including a bishop’s coat of arms and the initials of Józef Lewicki, a former monastery superior who later became bishop of the Chełm Eparchy. Each tile, meticulously shaped for a stove, tells a story of craftsmanship and religious symbolism from a bygone era.
Officials from the Lublin Voivodeship Conservator of Monuments hailed the find as “sensational,” noting its uniqueness in shedding light on the monastery’s history. The tiles, some measuring up to 25.8 cm square, are now being carefully inventoried and reconstructed, promising to deepen our understanding of the period’s artistry and culture.
This discovery adds to Poland’s string of remarkable archaeological finds this year, from ancient weapons on Baltic shores to a medieval ring at Wawel Royal Castle. It’s a reminder that history, much like a good Polish pierogi, is layered, surprising, and always worth digging into.

These tiles are like the monastery’s Instagram posts from the 1700s—fancy, symbolic, and shouting, ‘Look at our bishop’s bling!’ Who knew monks had such a flair for interior decorating?
