Stephanie Turner, a women's fencer, has thrust herself into the spotlight and the center of heated debates about transgender inclusion in sports after kneeling in protest against competing with a transgender opponent. Her bold move at the Cherry Blossom Open in Maryland has sparked global awareness and controversy.

Turner, 31, who has been fencing competitively for over a decade, made the decision to kneel just before facing Redmond Sullivan, a transgender athlete previously competing in the men's division. In doing so, Turner was disqualified and escorted out of the venue, marking an abrupt end to her participation in the event. But her actions were deliberate, calculated, and deeply rooted in her convictions.

"It will probably, at least for the moment, destroy my life," Turner admitted in an interview. "It's very hard for me to do this." Yet she felt compelled to take a stand on what she views as an infringement on the rights of biological women in sports. Turner's stance stems from her belief that there is an undeniable difference between men and women, even after hormone treatments, and that these differences can impact the integrity of women's sports. Interestingly, Turner’s political affiliations have shifted as a direct consequence of her views on this matter. A lifelong Democrat, she now identifies as a "new Republican conservative," citing dissatisfaction with what she perceives as extremist liberal views holding sports institutions and athletes hostage.

Born and raised in Washington D.C., Turner has called Montgomery County, Maryland, home for years—a place known for its liberal leaning. Her close social circle includes members of the LGBT community, making her stand not just controversial but personally challenging. "I love them on a personal level," Turner said, expressing worry about losing friendships over her stance.

Turner’s fencing career has been marked by dedication, with 21 podium finishes and a gold medal in women's foil at the Trick or Retreat ROC event in New Jersey. But her commitment to the sport has also meant navigating USA Fencing's gender eligibility policy, which allows transgender athletes to compete in women’s categories after a year of testosterone suppression treatment.

Her protest was not entirely unprecedented. Turner had previously avoided events with transgender participants, choosing not to register. But this time, the situation caught her off guard when Sullivan registered after her, leaving her no choice but to confront the issue head-on.

"I was like, ‘You know what, I’m just going to give it to God. If this person shows up into my event, and they're on my strip, then I will take a knee,'" Turner said. Her prayerful resolve led to a viral moment that’s now part of sports history.

Despite the backlash and potential personal costs, Turner’s actions have resonated with some, including organizations like XX-XY Athletics, which featured her protest in a commercial. However, USA Fencing defended its inclusive policies, emphasizing that her disqualification was solely due to her refusal to compete, as outlined by International Fencing Federation rules.

Turner’s protest has reignited debates about transgender athletes in women’s sports, challenging institutions and politicians to reevaluate their policies. "It's a litmus test for common sense," Turner argued. "Something needs to be done."
