Stephen A. Smith reignites feud with LeBron James on ESPN, accusing him of lying and questioning his absences at key NBA events, sparking fresh controversy.
Stephen A. Smith, the outspoken ESPN personality, reignited his feud with NBA legend LeBron James during a fiery segment on "First Take" this Thursday. Smith accused James of "lying" about the nature of his commentary, insisting that his mentions of James' son, Bronny, were strictly about basketball and not personal.
In a 15-minute monologue, Smith took it several steps further, highlighting the topics he has intentionally avoided, including LeBron’s absence from Kobe Bryant’s memorial and Dwyane Wade’s Hall of Fame induction. "I suggest he be happy with the things I haven't brought up," Smith remarked, making it clear that he could have been far more critical.
Smith pointed out that he refrained from discussing James’ decision not to attend Wade’s induction, despite the pivotal role Wade played in helping him secure his first championship. "Weeks earlier, you were out of the country on business. But when it came to Dwyane Wade—a brother who drastically helped you become the champion you are—you weren’t there," Smith said, delivering a sharp reminder of loyalty and legacy.
As for Bryant’s memorial, it’s worth noting that reports in 2020 confirmed LeBron was present but kept a low profile, citing emotional turmoil. Smith, however, didn’t hold back in questioning James’ public demeanor during these events.
The feud took an even more petty turn when James posted an old video of Smith boxing, a clip from over a decade ago when Smith was dealing with torn rotator cuffs. Smith called out the post, labeling it as "embarrassing" but expressing disbelief over James stooping to such levels. "You’re LeBron James, and this is what you’re doing? That’s how petty you’ve become?" Smith asked, clearly unimpressed.
Smith speculated that LeBron’s apparent sensitivity might stem from his realization that he may never surpass Michael Jordan in the "greatest of all time" debate—a theory bound to ruffle feathers in basketball circles.
Meanwhile, LeBron led the Lakers to a victory against the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday night but has yet to respond to Smith’s pointed commentary.
One thing’s clear: this verbal sparring match isn’t cooling down anytime soon.

Stephen A. Smith sure knows how to escalate a feud, but wow, bringing up Kobe Bryant and Dwyane Wade? That’s hitting some sensitive spots. Also, LeBron posting that boxing video—kind of feels like high school drama, doesn’t it? For someone aiming to be the GOAT, this level of pettiness might not be the best look.
