A military plane crash in Omdurman, Sudan, killed at least 46 people, including civilians and military officials, amid ongoing conflict and a severe cholera outbreak.
A tragic military aircraft crash in Omdurman, Sudan, has resulted in a devastating loss of life, with the death toll climbing to at least 46 people, including women and children. This marks one of the deadliest aviation incidents in the nation in recent years. The Antonov aircraft went down on Tuesday in a populated area of Omdurman, also leaving at least 10 individuals injured, according to the Khartoum Media Office.
The Sudanese military reported that the plane crashed shortly after takeoff from the Wadi Sayidna air base, located north of Khartoum. The impact caused significant damage to homes in the Karrari district of Omdurman.
While the military confirmed fatalities among both armed forces personnel and civilians, details regarding the cause of the crash remain undisclosed. Bodies have been transported to the Nau hospital in Omdurman for identification and processing.
Among the deceased are high-ranking military officials, including Maj. Gen. Bahr Ahmed Bahr and Lt. Col. Awad Ayoub, as well as the aircraft's crew. Tragically, the victims also include women and children, with reports indicating that five siblings were among those who perished. It’s just heartbreaking to imagine the impact on those families.
Eyewitness accounts describe the aircraft heading towards Port Sudan before crashing in the Al-Thawra neighborhood, triggering loud explosions and a thick cloud of smoke over Omdurman.
Sudan's aviation safety record is unfortunately poor, with aircraft crashes being relatively common. A similar incident in 2020 claimed the lives of at least 16 people when a military plane crashed in the Darfur region. In 2003, a civilian plane crash resulted in 116 fatalities.
Adding to the country's woes, Sudan is currently grappling with a severe cholera outbreak that has claimed nearly 1,500 lives and affected approximately 56,000 people since July of last year. The outbreak has strained resources and further destabilized the region, already reeling from nearly two years of civil war.
The ongoing conflict between the Sudanese military and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has led to widespread devastation, atrocities, and displacement, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis. The war has intensified in recent months, with both sides claiming victories in various parts of the country.
The RSF has claimed responsibility for downing a military aircraft in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur province, further escalating tensions and contributing to the already volatile situation. It's like, can anything catch a break in that country?
