Summer heat can strain your heart, increasing risks of heart attacks and failure. Learn how to protect yourself with expert tips.
As summer temperatures soar, the heat isn’t just a nuisance—it can be a serious threat to your heart. Extreme heat forces the body into overdrive, and for those with pre-existing heart conditions, the risks are even more pronounced. Cardiologist Dr. Adedapo Iluyomade from Miami explains that when our bodies heat up, blood vessels near the skin expand to cool us down, pushing the heart to pump faster and work harder to maintain blood pressure. This increased demand for oxygen can strain the heart significantly.
Heat’s Hidden Dangers: Even a slight rise in core body temperature can spike heart rates by nearly 30 beats per minute, according to a recent analysis of over 6,000 heat exposure cases. Dr. Iluyomade warns that for every 1°C increase in temperature, the risk of cardiovascular death climbs by about 2%. Heat waves, in particular, heighten the chances of heart attacks, heart failure, and irregular rhythms—sometimes even triggering silent heart attacks in those with underlying coronary issues.
For individuals on heart medications, the heat can amplify the body’s response, making precautions all the more critical. Dr. Iluyomade advises avoiding outdoor activities during peak heat hours, staying hydrated with electrolytes, and seeking cool or shaded environments. But it’s not just those with known conditions who need to be vigilant. Symptoms like chest tightness, shortness of breath, a racing heart, or dizziness could signal heat-related cardiac stress, even in seemingly healthy individuals.
Stay Cool, Stay Safe: Simple steps can make a big difference—stick to light, breathable clothing, take breaks in air-conditioned spaces, and avoid strenuous activities during the hottest parts of the day. As Dr. Iluyomade puts it, a little caution can help your heart beat the summer heat without skipping a beat.
