Tragedy struck in Frisco, Texas, as a 16-year-old high school athlete was fatally stabbed during a championship track meet, allegedly by a fellow competitor from another school.
Frisco Police revealed the victim, Austin Metcalf, a junior at Frisco Memorial High School, succumbed to his injuries despite emergency lifesaving efforts. Meanwhile, the suspect, 17-year-old Karmelo Anthony from Frisco Centennial High School, has been charged with first-degree murder.
The shocking incident unfolded at Kuykendall Stadium during the University Interscholastic League's District 11-5A championship meet around 10 a.m. The meet, featuring athletes from eight schools, was immediately suspended, and students were swiftly sent back to their campuses, according to the Frisco Independent School District.
Metcalf, a multi-talented athlete who also played football, had competed earlier in the boys’ shot put and discus events. His performances measured 39 feet, 9¾ inches in shot put and 86 feet, 4 inches in discus. Anthony, on the other hand, had run the boys' 100-meter dash in 12.38 seconds and was slated to participate in the long jump before the tragic altercation.
Frisco Memorial Principal Brook Fesco addressed the devastating loss in an email, stating that counselors would be available to support students processing their grief. She urged parents to guide their children through this difficult time, emphasizing the importance of discussing loss and expressing feelings openly.
The Frisco Police Department also issued a heartfelt statement, extending condolences to the victim's family and everyone affected by the tragedy. The department assured the community of its continued collaboration with the school district during this profoundly challenging time.
The incident has jolted the local high school sports community, casting a shadow over what was supposed to be a day of athletic achievement. For a young life to end in such a senseless act is a grim reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of addressing violence among youth.

What makes this story all the more heartbreaking is the backdrop—a championship meet, the kind of event that’s supposed to celebrate youthful potential and camaraderie. Instead, it became a scene of violence that will haunt the community for years. Also, can we talk about how a 17-year-old involved in competitive sports ends up being charged with murder? That’s a reality check no one saw coming.
