Umpqua Community College mourns the tragic loss of softball player Kiley Jones and coach Jami Strinz after a fatal crash, with several others hospitalized and an ongoing investigation.
The Umpqua Community College softball community is in mourning after a devastating head-on collision on Friday night claimed the lives of freshman player Kiley Jones and head coach Jami Strinz. The team was returning from a game in Coos Bay, Oregon, when tragedy struck, leaving a deep void in the hearts of students, staff, and families.
According to officials, the team bus was driven by Coach Strinz when a Chevrolet Silverado traveling in the opposite direction veered across the centerline and slammed into their vehicle. The crash occurred around 9:56 p.m., and the impact was severe enough to claim Jones' life at the scene. Strinz, who was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, later succumbed to her injuries.
UCC President Dr. Rachel Pokrandt expressed the college’s grief, noting, "UCC hearts are breaking with this news, and we ask the community to keep the families and all of those affected in their thoughts and prayers." In the aftermath, support services have been made available for students, faculty, and staff grappling with the loss.
There were 10 team members on the bus at the time. Eight others sustained moderate to serious injuries and remain hospitalized in Eugene and Portland. The driver of the Silverado, identified as 32-year-old Johnathan James Dowdy, also suffered serious injuries and was transported for medical care. As of now, the investigation into what caused the crash is ongoing.
Jones, just 19, played first base in all 28 of her appearances for the team. Coach Strinz, who made history as the program’s first head coach, leaves behind a partner and daughter. Her leadership and energy were pivotal in shaping the young team’s spirit.
Oregon Governor Tina Kotek shared her condolences, stating, "My heart aches for the @umpquacc family reeling from this tragedy. Oregon is here for you in your grief and loss."
In a mark of respect, Umpqua Community College canceled Saturday’s games. The team’s next scheduled matchup is set for Friday, though the road ahead will be a tough one for everyone involved.

If ever there was a reminder that life throws curveballs far worse than any pitcher could, it's this. The Umpqua team’s resilience will be tested in ways nobody ever expected—here's hoping their community rallies harder than a dugout in extra innings. Meanwhile, let’s just say Oregon highways owe everyone a much safer ride home.
