Tragic stabbing in Portland, Oregon: Neilyann Ysman, 24, killed in her home with five children present. Suspect S Mate Joseph charged with murder.
In a heartbreaking incident in Portland, Oregon, a young mother, Neilyann Ysman, aged 24, was tragically stabbed to death in her home on Saturday. The horror unfolded in the presence of her five young children, all under six years old, who were thankfully unharmed and rescued by police. The suspect, 28-year-old S Mate Joseph, was apprehended hours later in Vancouver and now faces serious charges, including second-degree murder and domestic violence.
Responding to the scene around 12:30 p.m. in the 6400 block of Southeast 143rd Court, Portland Police Bureau (PPB) took no chances, using explosives to breach a garage door amid fears the suspect might still be inside. Neighbors described a chilling aftermath, with one, Julia Mannthey, noting the children appeared numb, unable to process the tragedy. Another resident, Shawn Lioyryan, expressed alarm at the heavy police presence in a typically quiet neighborhood, underscoring the shock this incident has caused.
The Medical Examiner confirmed Ysman’s cause of death as a stab wound, ruling it a homicide. Joseph, already burdened with a troubling criminal history including domestic violence and bail jumping, was booked into Clark County Jail. While the relationship between Joseph and Ysman remains unclear, the layers of domestic conflict in his record paint a grim picture.
This devastating event is a stark reminder of the hidden struggles behind closed doors, even in communities where safety feels assured. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on supporting these young children who have lost so much in an instant.

This tragedy cuts deeper than the blade itself—five kids left without a mom, and a suspect with a rap sheet longer than a Portland winter. If domestic violence is a shadow in our neighborhoods, shouldn’t we be shining a brighter light? And hey, maybe it’s time we lock up repeat offenders before they turn a family home into a crime scene—call it ‘preventive garage door blasting.’
