Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins has announced a plan to tackle rising egg prices, both immediately and in the future.
Rollins revealed the strategy on Fox News' "America's Newsroom," stating that the Trump administration is adopting a multifaceted approach to combat the bird flu, which has decimated chicken populations and caused egg prices to skyrocket.
Rollins attributed the current high prices to a "long road" of overregulation that began during the Obama administration.
The Trump administration is also focusing on helping poultry farmers rebuild their flocks after many were forced to cull their entire populations due to the virus. Rollins mentioned that the administration is reviewing the effectiveness of this culling policy.
When questioned by host Dana Perino about potentially revising the chicken culling policy, Rollins confirmed that the Trump administration is exploring whether a change would be beneficial.
"We are going to have some pilot programs across the country that work to prove that out," Rollins said. "The avian flu is an extremely fast-spreading virus, and within a couple of days it spreads so quickly that most of the chickens have died anyway. But there are some farms that are out there and that are willing to really try this."
Rollins added that, in the short term, her agency is working to import eggs from other countries to meet demand and lower prices in the U.S. However, she emphasized that this is not a sustainable long-term solution.

It's interesting to see the Trump administration questioning a policy that's been in place for a while. Let's hope these pilot programs yield some egg-cellent results!
