Brief
Governor Kathy Hochul met President Trump at the White House to discuss tariffs, energy, and congestion pricing amid escalating tensions over New York policies and Penn Station redevelopment.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul met with President Trump at the White House for what her office described as a "productive" conversation covering a wide array of topics including tariffs, energy, congestion pricing, and the redevelopment of Penn Station. Sounds like a packed agenda, even if no formal decisions came out of it.
A spokesperson for Hochul’s office emphasized that while no agreements were reached, the meeting was a "good start" and that the governor's team is looking forward to further discussions. The White House, however, offered little detail, confirming the meeting but noting it was off the record.
Interestingly, this meeting comes amid rising tensions between the two leaders. Governor Hochul recently declared she would be "leading the resistance" against Trump’s policies, specifically targeting the administration's move to block New York City’s congestion pricing plan. Hochul has been vocal about her opposition, stating, "This is our decision, not yours," during an NPR interview.
Trump, ever the showman, seemed unbothered. He told reporters prior to the meeting, "Kathy Hochul, very nice woman; she’s coming in tomorrow morning at 9 o’clock to meet me." He mentioned discussing topics like reviving the Constitution natural gas pipeline from Pennsylvania to New York. Casual, right?
The clash over congestion pricing has been particularly heated. Trump’s administration set a deadline to shut it down, calling it "dead" in a February White House post. He even added a dramatic flourish, declaring Manhattan and all of New York "saved" and signing off with "LONG LIVE THE KING!". Hochul fired back, reminding everyone that New York hasn’t bowed to a king in over 250 years—and isn’t about to start now. Her sharp critique included a jab about Trump likely never missing a child’s sporting event due to a delayed train. Ouch.
To add a twist, Hochul’s stance has shifted recently. Two weeks ago, she told reporters, "I’m governing the great state of New York," implying resistance wasn’t her focus. Now? She’s ready to "fight back hard" and lead the charge against Trump’s policies. Apparently, the olive branch she once extended has been traded for a battle flag.
While it remains to be seen how these political tensions play out, one thing’s clear: New Yorkers are caught in the crossfire of this high-stakes rivalry. The question is, who will blink first?

This meeting feels like a scene straight out of a political drama—two leaders at odds but still managing to sit down for a chat. Hochul’s resistance rhetoric flipping in just two weeks is a bit eyebrow-raising, though. Makes you wonder if she’s feeling the heat politically or just trying to keep Trump off balance. Also, Trump’s "LONG LIVE THE KING!" remark? Classic Trump, always the provocateur.
