Trump says China is eager for a U.S. trade deal as talks begin in Switzerland, aiming to address tariffs and the $1.2 trillion trade deficit.
President Donald Trump has signaled that China is keen to strike a trade deal with the U.S. as high-stakes negotiations loom in Switzerland this Saturday. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will lead the talks, aiming to address the escalating tariff war between Washington and Beijing.
"China very much wants to make a deal," Trump said Thursday at the White House, dismissing the optics of who initiated contact. "It only matters what happens in that room." His comments reflect confidence in securing a deal, though he emphasized fairness, noting discussions with Beijing cover multiple fronts.
Trump, a long-time advocate for tariffs, argues they’re essential to tackle the U.S.’s $1.2 trillion trade deficit in 2024 and revive American manufacturing. Bessent, meanwhile, warned that China’s tariffs could cost them up to 10 million jobs if unchanged, with even partial reductions potentially slashing 5 million. "They sell five times more to us than we do to them," Bessent told reporters, urging Beijing to act.
On Tuesday, Bessent revealed the U.S. is engaging with multiple nations, hinting at major trade deals possibly emerging soon. With both sides under pressure, the Switzerland talks could reshape global trade dynamics.
