A new GOP bill, the SWAMP Act, seeks to sell the Nancy Pelosi Federal Building in San Francisco, citing fiscal responsibility and reduced federal overreach. GSA reviews options.
FIRST ON FOX: A new Republican-backed bill aims to put the Nancy Pelosi Federal Building up for sale, potentially at the direction of former President Donald Trump. The legislation, titled the Stop Wasteful Allocations of Money for Pelosi (SWAMP) Act, is spearheaded by Representative Buddy Carter from Georgia.
The proposed bill instructs the General Services Administration (GSA) to "dispose of the property" or sell it "at fair market value and for the highest and best use," according to the text obtained by Fox News Digital. The initiative is part of a broader GOP effort to advance Trump's policy priorities through legislation, even as he is no longer in office.
"We are over $36 trillion in debt. Instead of maintaining expensive, underutilized vanity projects for liberal politicians, the federal government should be focused on efficiency and fiscal responsibility," Carter told Fox News Digital. Ouch—Carter didn’t hold back there. He further stated that selling the building would help reduce federal overreach, cut national debt, and prioritize taxpayers' interests.
The Nancy Pelosi Federal Building, located in San Francisco, stands 18 stories high and houses various government offices, including Pelosi’s district office along with the Department of Labor, Department of Health and Human Services, and the Social Security Administration. Let’s just say, it’s not exactly prime real estate for bipartisan harmony.
While the GSA confirmed last week that it is considering selling such properties, a spokesperson denied any political motivations: "GSA is prioritizing the reduction of deferred liability costs across our real estate portfolio, including the potential sale of buildings in need of extensive repair. Any suggestion that our planning is driven by politics is absurd." The agency emphasized it is working with tenant agencies to assess their needs before making any final decisions.
Interestingly, the building—which was designed to reflect environmental sustainability—has faced criticism for the condition of the surrounding area, which has reportedly become a hub for illicit activities. And if that wasn’t enough, Trump himself once called it "one of the ugliest structures" in San Francisco during his presidency, in a 2020 executive order focused on revitalizing federal buildings. Not exactly glowing Yelp review material.
The San Francisco Chronicle had reported that Trump was eyeing the building for sale, but the GSA’s statement suggests the move aligns more with logistical and financial priorities rather than a personal vendetta. Still, the optics are hard to ignore.
Fox News Digital reached out to Pelosi’s office for comment, but no response was received by the time of publication. The quiet on her end speaks volumes—or maybe just hints at a packed schedule.
