Trump Demands Apology from Maine Gov. Mills Over Transgender Sports Controversy

The political feud between President Donald Trump and Maine Governor Janet Mills has hit another snag, with Trump publicly demanding an apology from her.

In a Saturday morning post on Truth Social, Trump declared he has not heard from Mills since their clash last month over transgender athletes participating in girls’ and women’s sports. According to Trump, while the state of Maine issued an apology for Mills’ "incorrect" statement during a White House Governor’s Conference, the governor herself has remained silent.

Trump wrote, "Therefore, we need a full-throated apology from the Governor herself, and a statement that she will never make such an unlawful challenge to the Federal Government again, before this case can be settled. I’m sure she will be able to do that quite easily." He also added his signature slogan, "MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!"

The dispute stems from Maine’s initial resistance to comply with Trump’s executive order barring transgender athletes from women’s sports. The U.S. Department of Agriculture temporarily paused funding to the University of Maine System during the standoff, but reinstated it days later after Maine agreed to comply.

Meanwhile, Representative Laurel Libby, a Republican, has been embroiled in her own controversy. Earlier this month, Libby was censured by Maine’s Democratic majority for identifying an underage trans athlete in a social media post. The censure prevents her from participating in legislative duties unless she apologizes—a move she has refused, opting instead to file a lawsuit seeking restoration of her voting and speaking rights.

The USDA has now confirmed that the University of Maine System is in compliance with the executive order.

The political tensions surrounding transgender inclusion in sports continue to fuel heated debates, with both sides digging their heels in deeper. Whether Governor Mills will respond to Trump’s demand remains to be seen, but if history is any indication, she’s unlikely to make a full-throated apology anytime soon.
