Donald Trump appoints his personal lawyer, Alina Habba, as interim U.S. Attorney for New Jersey, continuing a trend of elevating loyalists to top Justice Department roles.

Donald Trump, former president and current Republican leader, announced Monday that his personal lawyer, Alina Habba, will serve as interim U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey. This marks yet another instance of Trump elevating loyalists to significant roles within the Department of Justice.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump confirmed that Habba, who has been serving as his White House counsel, will take over from John Giordano, the outgoing acting U.S. attorney. Giordano, meanwhile, is set to become the U.S. Ambassador to Namibia. Talk about career twists!

Trump lauded Habba’s qualifications, describing her as someone who "will lead with the same diligence and conviction that has defined her career." He added that she would "fight tirelessly to secure a Legal System that is both ‘Fair and Just’ for the wonderful people of New Jersey." It's worth noting, though, that the people of New Jersey might be wondering how much "justice" is left when political ties seem to outweigh merit.

Giordano, who was appointed to his acting role less than a month ago by U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, is moving on to diplomacy. Trump congratulated both Habba and Giordano in his social media announcement but didn’t give much context for the abrupt personnel changes.

Habba has long been a Trump ally, serving as both a legal spokesperson for his presidential super PAC, MAGA Inc., and as a trusted counsel during his recent legal battles. Her appointment is the latest in a pattern of Trump promoting loyalists to senior law enforcement positions during his second White House term. Surely, critics are already sharpening their knives over what they see as politicization of the Justice Department.

Trump’s Justice Department lineup has raised some eyebrows. Pam Bondi, Todd Blanche, and Emil Bove—all legal heavyweights who have represented Trump personally—now hold top DOJ positions. Democrats are concerned about whether this cozy network might compromise the impartiality of the nation’s legal system.

While Trump’s base might cheer these moves as loyalty rewarded, others might say it feels like a family reunion rather than an administration serving the public. But hey, love him or hate him, Trump does know how to keep things interesting.

Trump’s habit of promoting his legal allies to top roles is eyebrow-raising to say the least. It’s a bold move, but it leaves lingering questions about what this means for impartiality in the justice system. It’s almost as if the Department of Justice is becoming the Department of Trump’s Trusted Friends. While loyalty is admirable, the optics of this decision might not sit well with everyone.
