President Trump nominates Michael DeSombre as Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia and the Pacific, alongside key diplomatic appointments to Tunisia, Singapore, and global partnerships.

President Donald Trump has announced the nomination of Michael George DeSombre as the next U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia and the Pacific. The move highlights Trump's continued focus on strengthening U.S. engagement in the region during his second term.

DeSombre, who served as a U.S. ambassador to Thailand during Trump’s first term, brings a robust resume to the role. Currently a partner at Sullivan & Cromwell, where he specializes in mergers and acquisitions in Asia, DeSombre also boasts academic credentials from Harvard Law School and Stanford University, where he earned degrees in quantitative economics and East Asian Studies.

Trump expressed his confidence in DeSombre’s abilities on Truth Social, stating, "I know Michael will work incredibly hard for our country." It’s safe to say the president has a knack for picking individuals with hefty portfolios.

In another set of diplomatic appointments, Trump revealed that Paolo Zampolli has been tapped as special envoy for global partnerships. Zampolli’s background includes work with the United Nations, the Kennedy Center, and international initiatives, making him a familiar figure in the world of global diplomacy. Trump emphasized Zampolli's ability to advance America’s interests on the global stage.

The announcements didn’t stop there. Trump also named Dearborn Heights, Michigan Mayor Bill Bazzi as the U.S. ambassador to Tunisia. Bazzi, a decorated U.S. Marine with 21 years of service, is no stranger to leadership. After retiring from Ford Motor Company, where he worked as a product development engineer, Bazzi transitioned into public service as mayor. Trump praised Bazzi's contributions during the 2024 Presidential Election, calling him instrumental in securing their "Historic Victory."

Lastly, Dr. Anji Sinha has been selected to serve as the U.S. ambassador to Singapore. Trump described Sinha as "a highly respected entrepreneur with an incredible family." He stressed the importance of the U.S.-Singapore relationship and expressed confidence in her ability to represent American interests effectively.

These high-profile nominations reflect a mix of military service, business acumen, and diplomatic expertise, underscoring Trump’s approach to assembling his foreign policy team.

Trump is clearly doubling down on experience and loyalty with these picks, which is textbook strategy for anyone trying to solidify their legacy. DeSombre’s academic and professional credentials definitely shine, but the real curveball here is Paolo Zampolli – a name that’s more familiar from the social circuit than the diplomatic one. Let’s hope his connections translate well into partnerships because this isn’t a cocktail party anymore.
