Brief

Donald Trump plans to speak with Vladimir Putin to push a Ukraine war peace deal, discussing ceasefire terms, territorial concessions, and NATO concerns amid ongoing negotiations.

Former President Donald Trump has announced plans to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday to push forward a potential deal to end the war in Ukraine. Posting on his Truth Social platform, Trump revealed that while many aspects of a 'Final Agreement' have been settled, significant hurdles remain.

Trump’s post took a serious tone as he highlighted the human toll of the conflict, stating, "Thousands of young soldiers, and others, are being killed. Each week brings 2,500 soldier deaths, from both sides, and it must end NOW." He added, "I look very much forward to the call with President Putin."

Key topics for the discussion are rumored to include contentious issues like territorial concessions by Kyiv and control of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. Earlier reports indicated that the Trump administration has been negotiating an end to the three-year-long war, with Russia demanding guarantees that Ukraine will not join NATO.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt expressed cautious optimism, stating last week, "We have never been closer to peace," while awaiting Moscow's response to a proposed 30-day ceasefire agreement. Ukraine has already accepted the deal, contingent on Russia committing to it during talks held in Saudi Arabia.

However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has voiced frustration at what he perceives as delays by Putin. "It’s clear to everyone in the world—even to those who refused to acknowledge the truth for the past three years—that it is Putin who continues to drag out this war," Zelenskyy stated on X (formerly Twitter). He urged global leaders to apply pressure on Moscow, emphasizing that an unconditional ceasefire is essential for saving lives and securing long-term peace.

"The proposal that Russia is ignoring is about saving lives and allowing diplomats to work," Zelenskyy remarked. "Pressure is needed to finally make Moscow accept that their war must be brought to an end."

While Trump’s upcoming call with Putin could mark a pivotal moment in the peace process, skepticism lingers. The Kremlin's reported demand for 'ironclad' guarantees and Putin’s apparent reluctance to agree to the ceasefire proposal highlight the complexities of reaching a lasting resolution.

It’s fascinating—and a little surreal—that Trump seems to be positioning himself as a lead negotiator in one of the world’s most persistent conflicts. The human cost he mentioned—2,500 deaths per week—is staggering, but let’s not overlook the political chess game here. Putin dragging his feet? Classic move. Zelenskyy calling him out? Bold, but predictable. Could this deal actually close with Trump’s involvement? Stranger things have happened, but don’t hold your breath.
