President Donald Trump expressed his admiration for Elon Musk on Thursday, stating that he wants the tech mogul to remain part of his administration "as long as possible." The remarks followed a report suggesting Musk might soon be stepping down from his role as a "special government employee" due to internal concerns over his unpredictability and potential political risks.

Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump dismissed claims of Musk’s imminent departure, calling him "fantastic" and "a patriot." He went further, saying, "I like smart people, and he's a smart person. I also like him personally." While Trump acknowledged that Musk would eventually have to leave his position, he hinted that he would consider appointing Musk to another role to extend his tenure. "I would. I think Elon’s great," he said, though he recognized Musk’s responsibilities with his various companies.

Musk’s current stint as a "special government employee"—a status permitting federal employment for no more than 130 days in a year—is set to expire on May 30. His work with the Department of Government Efficiency and Spending (DOGE) began after Trump signed an executive order establishing the office on January 20.
