Trump’s call with Putin sparks ceasefire talks between Russia and Ukraine, but tough demands and global stakes cloud the path to peace.
In a bold move to halt the bloodshed in Ukraine, President Donald Trump held a two-hour phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday, sparking hope for a ceasefire in the ongoing war. Trump, ever the dealmaker, described the conversation as "very well" and announced on social media that Russia and Ukraine would "immediately start negotiations toward a ceasefire" with an eye toward ending the conflict. The details, he noted, would be hashed out between the two nations, as they alone know the intricate stakes of their struggle.
Putin called the exchange "frank" and "useful," hinting that a ceasefire is possible but only through compromises that satisfy both sides. Yet, the path to peace remains murky. Recent talks in Turkey faltered when Russia reportedly demanded Ukraine cede four illegally annexed regions—Kherson, Donetsk, Luhansk, and Zaporizhzhia—and that global aid to Ukraine, including peacekeeping support, be halted. Ukrainian negotiators rejected these terms as "unacceptable."
Leading up to the call, Trump consulted with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as well as leaders like UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron, who pressed for an unconditional ceasefire backed by the threat of further sanctions. Trump, however, made no mention of sanctions post-call, leaving the outcome of his discussion with Putin ambiguous.
Zelenskyy, taking to X, called the moment "defining," urging world leaders to prove their commitment to "real, lasting peace." Meanwhile, Trump reached out to other global figures, including Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Finnish President Alexander Stubb, though none have publicly commented. Adding a spiritual dimension, Trump claimed the Vatican, led by Pope Leo XIV, expressed interest in hosting talks. The Pope echoed this sentiment on X, offering to mediate so that "enemies may meet" and restore the "dignity of peace."
While negotiations have been ongoing since March, the road ahead is fraught. Can Trump’s brash diplomacy bridge the gap where others have failed, or will the demands of war outweigh the fragile hope for peace?

Trump’s playing peacemaker like he’s hosting a global episode of The Apprentice, but Putin’s demands feel like a geopolitical shakedown. Why not throw in a timeshare in Crimea while he’s at it? The Pope’s ready to referee, but let’s hope this isn’t just another round of diplomatic dodgeball.
