President Donald Trump reignites his proposal for the U.S. to acquire Greenland, emphasizing its strategic value and extending an invitation during a joint session of Congress.

In a move that has people raising their eyebrows (and maybe checking their maps), President Donald Trump once again floated the idea of the U.S. acquiring Greenland during a joint session of Congress on Tuesday night. While the concept has been in his orbit for a while, this marked the first time he brought it up in such a high-profile setting.

Trump extended an open invitation to the people of Greenland, stating, "And I also have a message tonight for the incredible people of Greenland. We strongly support your right to determine your own future, and if you choose, we welcome you into the United States of America." Bold words for a country that doesn’t exactly have Greenland on speed dial.

The president justified the idea by emphasizing Greenland’s strategic importance. "For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity," he previously declared on his Truth Social platform. Tuesday’s address echoed this sentiment, with Trump promising security and prosperity for the island. "We will keep you safe. We will make you rich. And together we will take Greenland to heights like you have never thought possible before," he said.

While some may have dismissed this as yet another eyebrow-raising Trumpism, the president seems serious. He doubled down on the idea in earlier social media posts, calling Greenland "an incredible place" and promising to "protect it, and cherish it, from a very vicious outside World." He even threw in a slogan for good measure: "MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN!" If nothing else, he certainly knows how to brand an idea.

Of course, there’s the small issue of Greenland already being part of the Realm of Denmark, albeit with its own extensive local government. According to Denmark’s official website, the island is under its jurisdiction. Whether Denmark—or Greenlanders themselves—are on board with this grand vision remains a question mark.

Trump’s remarks have reignited debates over the feasibility and implications of such a move. While some see it as a geopolitical power play, others view it as another chapter in Trump’s unconventional approach to diplomacy. Either way, this isn’t the last we’ll be hearing about Greenland from the former president.

Trump pitching Greenland as the 51st state feels like a plot twist no one saw coming—or maybe we did? The audacity here is almost impressive, but it’s hard to imagine Denmark handing over the keys to such a strategically vital island. And let’s not overlook the poetic absurdity of 'Make Greenland Great Again.' If nothing else, the man knows how to keep us talking.
