There's been a lot of chatter about whether the Super Bowl champs, the Philadelphia Eagles, would make the customary pilgrimage to the White House. President Trump told The Spectator on Friday that, indeed, the Eagles are on their way. "They’re coming here. Philadelphia is coming here," Trump declared.
But hold up – the team itself hasn't RSVP'd yet.
Remember the 2018 Super Bowl? The Eagles snagged their first win during Trump's term, and things got a little awkward when the team declined the invite. Trump, never one to let things slide, canceled the invitation, citing disagreement over players kneeling during the national anthem. It was a whole thing.
Trump mentioned on Tuesday that an invite would be extended, saying, "They will be [invited]. We haven't yet, but we will be... They deserve to be down here, and we hope to see them."
Lane Johnson, the veteran offensive lineman, mentioned post-Super Bowl that a White House visit would be a "team decision." Johnson was around in 2018 when the invitation got pulled after players protested racial injustice.
Trump's statement back then? "The 1,000 fans planning to attend the event deserve better," and that the players "disagree with their President because he insists that they proudly stand for the National Anthem."

Okay, so Trump says they're coming, but the Eagles haven't confirmed. This reminds me of that time my ex said he was 'totally' doing the dishes. I'll believe it when I see it. I'm not holding my breath on this one, especially given the history.
