President Donald Trump hits highest approval rating in NBC News poll, yet remains highly polarizing amid partisan divides on the economy, border security, and national direction.
President Donald Trump has reached his all-time highest approval rating, according to a recent NBC News poll. A solid 54% of registered voters currently approve of his performance, matching his previous career peak. However, the numbers reveal a sharply divided electorate, with 51% disapproving of his handling of the presidency.
The poll also highlights that 44% of voters believe the country is on the right track—a personal best for Trump. Still, a majority, 54%, feel the nation is on the wrong path, underscoring the mixed sentiment surrounding his leadership.
It’s clear that Trump’s support hails predominantly from his Republican base. A staggering 90% of Republicans approve of his performance, while only 4% of Democrats feel the same. This stark partisan split is reportedly the largest in 80 years of polling history, showcasing just how polarizing his presidency remains.
Interestingly, Trump has lost some ground on the economy, a cornerstone issue of his political messaging. For the first time in NBC News polling, a majority of voters disapprove of his economic policies. Only 18% of respondents rated the economy as "excellent" or "good," with the divide falling sharply along party lines—26% of Republicans versus just 11% of Democrats.
These numbers reflect a dramatic shift from October 2024, when just 5% of Republicans rated the economy positively compared to 52% of Democrats. Something tells me these numbers might be giving political strategists on both sides a headache.
Where Trump has found consistent support is on immigration and border security. A majority, 55%, approve of his handling of this issue, compared to 44% who disapprove. Trump has touted his administration’s "sweeping border and immigration crackdown," promising to bring illegal border crossings under control.
The poll—conducted with 1,000 registered voters between March 7 and March 11—has a margin of error of 3.1 percentage points. It was launched just a day after Trump’s joint address to Congress on March 6, where he made bold promises to tackle the economy and bring relief to struggling families. Trump blamed his predecessor, former President Joe Biden, for leaving behind an economic mess, citing a staggering 20% increase in consumer prices during Biden’s tenure.
"Among my very highest priorities is to rescue our economy and get dramatic and immediate relief to working families," Trump declared to lawmakers. "As president, I am fighting every day to reverse this damage and make America affordable again." Whether that fight will sway the disillusioned remains to be seen, but he clearly isn’t giving up without a battle.

The biggest takeaway here isn’t just the numbers—it’s the sheer depth of the partisan divide. Trump is riding high with his loyalists, but the other side sees him as public enemy number one. While the immigration approval might be a silver lining, the economy could be his Achilles’ heel. Also, let’s take a moment to appreciate how the approval/disapproval percentages almost look like they’re playing tug-of-war. Politics, huh? Always a numbers game—but one with a lot of drama.
