Brief

Trump’s massive spending and tax cut bill faces Senate scrutiny as polls show widespread public opposition, highlighting deep partisan divides.

President Donald Trump is touting his One, Big, Beautiful Bill as a triumph, but Americans aren’t quite singing its praises. The sprawling GOP legislation, which barely squeaked through the House last month, faces a Senate showdown this week, with a deadline looming by July 4. Trump’s social media enthusiasm—calling it a “great big beautiful bill”—highlights its ambitious scope: extending his 2017 tax cuts, slashing taxes on tips and overtime, bolstering border security, and pushing a hardline immigration agenda.

Yet, polls paint a grim picture. A recent national survey shows voters rejecting the bill by a 21-point margin, with 59% opposed. Other surveys echo this sentiment, with disapproval ratings climbing as high as 26 points. Why the cold shoulder? Democrats are zeroing in on the bill’s restructuring of Medicaid, a lifeline for 71 million low-income Americans. The Senate’s version dials up cuts to the program and introduces work requirements, alongside reductions to food stamps, to offset the tax cuts. Republicans counter that Democrats are fearmongering, accusing them of supporting tax hikes on everyday Americans.

The bill’s impact splits sharply along party lines. Nearly three-quarters of Republicans back it, while 89% of Democrats and 73% of independents give it a thumbs-down. About half of voters surveyed believe the bill will hurt their families, with only 23% expecting benefits. Despite 60% claiming a solid grasp of the legislation, skepticism persists. As the Senate dives into a marathon of votes, the bill’s fate—and its promise of sweeping change—hangs in the balance.

Trump’s bill is like a buffet—tax cuts and border walls for some, but the Medicaid cuts leave millions with an empty plate. Why does ‘beautiful’ always come with a catch? Maybe the Senate’s vote-a-rama will reveal if this bill’s a masterpiece or just a pricey doodle.
